A country with a strong character
A country with a strong character
With its identity, the Camargue country offers its tourists a total change of scenery. It takes you to the end of the world and immerses you in the heart of a wild Camargue where man cohabits with the famous Camargue bulls and horses. The closest to them being the guardians. These images released by the Camargue landscape are worthy of a real "western" film set, which moreover inspired several directors, such as, for example, in the early 1950s, Albert Lamorisse with his film "Crin-blanc ".
There are therefore many activities in the Camargue: hiking or cycling, visiting herds, but the most authentic way to discover the heart of the Camargue is still horseback riding. You can also leave the land to enjoy the immense paradisiacal beaches of the Camargue. And why not end a day of idleness with a boat trip at sea or on the Rhône?
Bullfighting traditions are deeply rooted, such as the Camargue race, the abrivado (release of bulls, accompanied by herdsmen on horseback. An event not to be missed, the pilgrimage of travelers which takes place at Saintes Maries de la Wed. gypsies also offer the Camargue a real cultural spectacle and give the opportunity to listen to many Flamenco musicians.
During these various events, the presence of the Arlésiennes and herdsmen also allows you to admire the traditional costumes of the Camargue.
A rich land
A rich land
The Camargue is developing a cereal and cattle sector that is unique in mainland France, that of rice and Camargue AOC bulls. Rice is the dominant production in the Camargue with approximately 20,000 hectares of rice fields. The climate allows only one crop per year. Sown in April, the harvest begins in mid-September. Camargue rice offers generous varieties such as white rice, red rice, black rice, of superior quality with nutritional benefits.
The Camargue exploits one of its natural resources: sea salt, at the Giraud saltworks or at Aigues-Mortes. The latter has been harvested by hand for generations. Unlike standard table salt, Camargue salt is unrefined. That is to say that it does not undergo any industrial treatment. It therefore remains rich in magnesium, trace elements and iron. However, even if Camargue coarse salt is considered the best in the world, the flagship product, salt caviar, as it is called, remains Camargue fleur de sel.
